4th June

Caleb arrived in foster with us yesterday evening, after being handed in through no fault of his own due to a change in his previous owners circumstances. Nothing seems to phase this gorgeous man though - he is one cheerful chappie! He hasn't put a paw wrong since he arrived & has us all completely smitten!

He's such a quirky character - Caleb generally loves everything and everyone, he's happy all the time! He spent last night in the living room & didn't make a peep all night long. He's spent a couple of hours at home alone with Dizzy today and coped brilliantly with that too & I got one bouncy welcome home (plus sulks and grumbles from Dizzy)! Caleb hasn't had a single accident in the house and goes straight outside for a pee when called. He's a chatty boy, he loves a good conversation (with us or himself!) ;) and can generally be found lying down in front of the garden door, staring out of the window and chattering away to himself.

Caleb is really quite overweight & there are a good few kilos that need to come off! We have also been told that he has a mild heart murmur that doesn't require treatment. We'll get him down to the vets to be weighed and have a good check-over so will be able to update on that more soon. He's on a very strict diet at the moment & together with gradually increased exercise, he'll shed those extra pounds in no time. It will be an on going process that will need to be continued in his forever home.

Caleb loves walks, although he's not physically able to do all the running his head wants to at the moment! He walks nicely on the lead, wearing a harness and talks all the way! He doesn't seem to have much of a recall and needs to gradually build up his activity levels, so it's short on lead walks for now and we'll increase slowly as he gets more used to it. He does respond perfectly (& enthusiastically) to his name in the house and will sit & lie down on command. He'll even stay for a little while, but gets fed up pretty quickly!

I'll update again as we get to know this very special boy. So far, I think he'd suit almost any home - he's lived with young children before so would be happy to do so again and can live with or without another dog - he gets on well with Dizzy, but so far they're not really interacting much. He's happy to be left for a few hours a day (no more than 4 in line with our adoption conditions) & so far doesn't seem to have a single flaw (expect maybe his fondness of food...it's going to take a bit of time to teach him not to sit in front of us staring while we eat!).

All in all, Caleb is an absolute joy to have around. He's practically perfect in every way!

Please form an orderly queue!

Please put in an application in the first instance if you are interested in Caleb. Approved applications will be home checked.

8th June

I can't believe Caleb's only been with us for four days - it feels as though he's been here forever, he's so settled and definitely thinks he's king dog in this house. Dizzy's doing his best to put him in his place, but any grumbles or sulks just wash right over Caleb! He's learnt quickly to respect Dizzy's space while his eating and definitely knows that there's no need to help Dizz with his dinner. Caleb's not reliant on Dizzy in anyway, but does enjoy his company and I keep catching the two of them curled up together for a snooze :luv:

Since his hair cut yesterday, he's obviously so much more comfortable, it's like he's been given a new lease of life. He tears around the living room and garden, throwing toys around the place and chasing his tail. It's so lovely to see him so cheerful, he puts a big grin on my face constantly. Caleb really loves his walks and does find it quite frustrating that he can't move as quick as he wants to and can't keep up with Dizzy - every now and then he'll let out a little whimper or yap of frustration but he quickly gets over it when he comes across something new and interesting to sniff. He has absolutely no recall so we're working on that, our priority at the moment is to get him out and moving for short bursts several times a day and build up from there.

This morning we took a slow half hour stroll which Caleb thoroughly enjoyed but it has really taken it out of him for the rest of the day! It won't be long until he's running laps though I'm sure. He travelled beautifully in the car for the short journey, he just curled up on the seat and didn't make a fuss.

I honestly don't have one negative thing I could say about this little man. He's a cheeky, cheerful and extremely affectionate boy - an absolute joy to share our home with.

Here he is on his walk this morning

Dizzy's the only one bonkers enough to refuse to come in from the garden in the pouring rain! Caleb has far more sense than that ;) ;)

Why am I not surprised! He is just a little bit lovely & has settled in so quickly, you'd never think he's only been here for two days!

Caleb went to the vets this morning for his first vaccination & a general health check. He currently weighs in at 15kgs which is actually better than I was expecting, but he should only be somewhere in the region of 10-12kgs so there are quite a few pounds to come off!

The vet had a good listen to his heart, and she said the murmur is so mild it's barely detectable. No treatment is required and with considerable weight loss, it's unlikely to ever affect Caleb - it just needs monitoring every now and then to keep an eye on it. Calebs joints are a little stiff, particularly his back legs, but this is only due to his weight and nothing more sinister than that so once those spare kilos start coming off, he'll be as sprightly as he should be for his age.

The only thing the vet picked up on was that his eyes are slightly dry (a common issue in the breed) - they've had a good check and again, no treatment his needed and he's not in any discomfort but he may need lubricating drops every now and then in the future, if they get irritated.

Caleb is continuing to be a total delight to have around - he's knackered after his eventful morning & is having a power nap before he gets his hair done this afternoon, to sort out all the knots he has in his gorgeous coat. He was quite unsettled by the storm we had this morning, crying & whimpering every time the thunder sounded but he soon settled, cuddled up to a very unimpressed Dizzy dog :) I completely love this sweet little man!

Caleb has had a really eventful day today! He'd barely recovered from all the walking he did on his trip to the vets when our groomer arrived to give him & Dizzy new hair dos :) We had hoped he'd be able to keep most of his gorgeous coat and just have a trim and the knots sorted out, but the poor boys hair was so matted right down to the skin, there was no option but to clip him short all over.

Our lovely groomer (Meg from Pawfection Mobile Groomers) did a fab job though and he still looks as gorgeous as ever and is SO much more comfortable. It would be really interesting to weigh him again now as he doesn't look nearly as tubby as he did before & is running around, playing like a pup :)

I let Caleb off the lead for the first time today and....he didn't go very far! Poor little guy really can't move very fast, but he tries his best to make his little legs keep up with Dizzy, bless him! His recall really isn't perfect yet - he will come back, just in his own time. We'll keep working on it and I'm sure he'll get better in time. He really, really loves his walks - in the house he's a total couch potato, breaking up naps on the couch with a slow potter around the garden but as soon as he thinks I'm getting my shoes, or going near his lead, he's waiting by the front door chattering away ready to go!

I can't say enough what an absolute joy he is to have around - he's such a sweet natured, quirky little character!

Caleb has been with us for almost two weeks now and is so settled you'd think he'd been here a lot longer! He & Dizzy seem to have bonded really well (although Dizzy does his best to hide that fact from us!) - they can generally be found curled up for a nap together.
(http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o505/DizzyDinosour/Caleb/17th2_zpsb3fc4a0e.jpg) (http://s1145.photobucket.com/user/DizzyDinosour/media/Caleb/17th2_zpsb3fc4a0e.jpg.html)

He's an affectionate boy and given the choice, he'd be glued to my side 24-7! He doesn't make any fuss if I leave the room shutting door, but if I leave it open he will follow right behind me. I'm not letting him follow me around the house and making sure I leave him for short periods so he doesn't get too used to being with me all the time.

Caleb is now being allowed off lead for most of his walk now - he doesn't go far from me and can generally be trusted to follow Dizzy when he returns to me. He does understand that he should come when called, but he does prefer to come in his time so that will need ongoing work. A (healthy) treat will always coax him back much quicker! He's an active boy and is starting to enjoy a bit of a run rather than a waddle. He's definitely happiest when he's out for walkies
(http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o505/DizzyDinosour/Caleb/17th1_zpsdef96c79.jpg) (http://s1145.photobucket.com/user/DizzyDinosour/media/Caleb/17th1_zpsdef96c79.jpg.html)

His only vice is food - if you're eating, you can be sure Caleb is nearby waiting & hoping for a crumb to be thrown his way. His meals are devoured quickly, but he's very good at leaving Dizzy alone to eat his dinner!

Hopefully it won't be long before Caleb has his own forever home.

Our lovely boy went to the vet for his second vaccination this morning (as always he was an angel in the car & behaved beautifully in the vets waiting room too). The vet had another listen to his heart and again, could still barely hear any irregularity at all so it is safe to say that any heart murmur he has is extremely mild.

After his injection & health check, Caleb happily hopped on to the scales & sat very proudly - and proud he should be! Two weeks ago he weighed in at 15kgs and today he was 14.20kgs! We're very happy with nearly a kilo loss in just two weeks so with continued diet & regular exercise he'll be a healthy weight in no time at all.

Our lovely Caleb has had a bit of an up & down week this week - but definitely more good news than bad!

The not so good news is that he's a little bit poorly at the moment, although thankfully nothing serious! For the past few days he'd been nibbling at a little area at the top of the inside of his hind legs - it was a little odd but he only did it every now and then & was otherwise extremely well so we thought nothing of it. But then yesterday it started getting worse throughout the day and then in the afternoon had some blood and puss leaking out of his bottom. He was taken straight down to the vets & it turns out he had a fairly nasty abscess in one of his anal glands that had gotten infected and then ruptured. The vet says that it's a result of being left with full anal glands for far too long and won't be an ongoing issue with the usual monitoring and emptying. He's got a course of antio-biotics and anti-flamitaries to sort the problem out and he's already loads happier and more comfortable.

But there are a few bits of good news for him too so it's not all bad! He had another weight in while being checked over yesterday and he's lost yet more weight and is now around 13.85  - he's really got this diet thing sussed out and the pounds are literally falling off.

The very best thing though, is that Caleb is having visitors this weekend who I'm sure will adore him (how could they not?!) - fingers & paws crossed he's inching closer to his happy ever after!

Caleb's happy face :D :D

Went to meet Caleb this morning, he is so lovely. I have fingers and toes crossed that I have a chance of adopting him, but I know there has been a lot of interest in him.

Hope I find out soon,

Sue. xx
