Title: Downsizing with a dog
Post by: AlfieLab on June 25, 2014, 13:35:34 pm
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice, I've just bought a 1 bedroom flat in Chislehurst http://www.alandemaid.co.uk/forsaleoffice/Chislehurst/693 (http://www.alandemaid.co.uk/forsaleoffice/Chislehurst/693) and I'm a little worried how my pup Alfie is going to find it. We currently live in a house with a garden but I've had to move for work. Has anyone had any experience downsizing? Did it affect your pups?

as long as you give them the same exercise and make sure he has regular access to go to the loo then he should be fine - my dogs spend most of their lives in a smallish area as they're not allowed upstairs - I do have access to outside though with a small yard

Thanks for the reassurance FrankieBeee...I walk him in the morning and on a night so hopefully he'll be fine  :)

only problem is noise as it can sometimes be amplified in flats

Although two good walks a day should be enough to keep him exercised, stimulated and happy, will you also be able to take him out last thing at night and first thing in the morning?  I couldn't work out if your new home will have any garden at all but it's not fun for a dog to have to hold on to his bladder for more than eight hours?  If you don't have a garden, I'm sure it won't be the first time Chislehurst has seen a man in a dressing gown out on the street at midnight.  ;D ;D

I've got to be honest, I don't think my Labs would cope at all well with not having fairly free access to a garden  :(   They love nothing more than mooching around, sunbathing, and having a bit of a play.  I'm sure they would go stir crazy.

As well there's also those times when an urgent 3am toilet break is needed, that would be tricky if you don't have a garden.  Hopefully I've misread it and you do have one.

If you're out the house all day with work I would make sure that he has plenty to keep him well stimulated or he could get into mischief or even depressed spending so much time on his own.

must admit it wasn't made clear if you were also out at work all day - I just assumed you were there for some of time during the day to let your dog out and go out with your dog (which is why I said regular access to outside).

Worth exploring
