Duke has arrived in Somerset after a blustery and rainy journey from South Wales. He travelled well and jumped in the car like a pro and settled quickly. We explored the fields and Duke quickly found the muddy puddles (he's a Lab!) A well deserved bath which he enjoyed and he stood well to be dried and brushed too. No problem clipping his nails either.
Duke like’s doggy company and has tried to initiate play with our resident dog, Freddie (ex-FP), but Freddie’s a wuss and needs a little more time to warm up. Duke LOVES human attention and will happily give nudges, cuddles in the hope of a big belly rub! We’ve had a brief introduction with our resident cat, Gerry, and there was a lot of noise so we’ll keep it to small introductions for now. Duke’s previous owner has said he’s good with cats, so we are open minded.
Duke will be spruced up and looking handsome at Paws4Tea at Llandaff on Saturday (21st November)
Enjoying the fields with Freddie

Duke had to be reminded a few times to go to his bed, but then settled pretty quickly and had a good night. Rich gets up 7ish so Duke and Freddie went out first thing to toilet. Duke is obviously house trained and asks to go out when he needs to. We go up the fields in the morning and we have Duke on a extender lead, although we don't think he'll have problems with recall as he checks to see where we all are and always responds to his name. He is a strong boy and you have to be firm when walking him, we are going to see about using a harness and also positive reinforcement to walk more to heel rather than pulling. I'm thinking it could just be excitement at this stage so will keep you updated.
Duke's had his health check and first vaccination and vet thinks he's in pretty good shape for a 10 year old. Needs to lose a little weight, but he's a chunky boy. He's best having short walks more often with being a little overweight so as not to put too much strain on his legs.

Handsome boy Duke look forward to meeting you on Saturday :)

Well, isn't he a gorgeous handsome boy. Sounds like you're in for lots of snuggles on Saturday Duke. Clare, I've got a harness here that should fit him, I'll bring it with me :)
-
Form an orderly queue, Duke will take as many cuddles as he can get!
Fran, a harness is definitely needed, thanks

Enjoy all the attention on Saturday Duke. You are irresistible xx

Duke is settling in well, he's very happy-go-lucky. We've been taking him for 2-3 20 min walks as with not having been walked regularly for a while he struggles with more. He really enjoys the fields and is not phased by the rain or mud and I even caught him rolling in poo! Even though he's on an extender lead I've been calling him back and he responds well. He likes to have a wander and sniff, but wouldn't think he'd go far as does look for us.
I've been leaving Duke in the kitchen for small amounts of time whilst I'm in the house (otherwise he follows me everywhere) and he's ok to be left, but he will try and find something to chew so this will be something to keep an eye on. He's taken some of Freddie's chew toys and will have a good chew when he's not demanding cuddles!

Duke and I really enjoyed the Paws4Tea at Llandaff today. Duke enjoyed the cwtches and meeting all the dogs (he is SO friendly!) and I was made to feel very welcome and put more faces to names, so thank you for a great event.
Duke got his harness and the difference was immediate, so I'm sure walks will be even more enjoyable from now on. Duke still travels very well and the hour journey to Cardiff and back doesn't phase him at all. We walked around the village when we got back and there were a few fireworks and they didn't phase him either (I'm not surprised!)
Hard work meeting his adoring public

I'm thinking this is Duke's favourite toy (he has his snout and paw squished in it!)

Duke's adventure to the beach and he loved it!! Safe to say, he's a water baby, and could've run after his frisbee all day. We're still watching he doesn't over do it exercise wise but he loved the water so much we let him have a few swims. Duke went offlead and he was good as gold and stayed closer to us than our own dog!
Loads of photos and a video so bear with...

Lucky boy Duke :) what a beautiful beach for playtimes
-
Great pictures. That's one of my favourite beaches, Dexter loves it, especially the pool that gathers under the little lighthouse type thing.

This week I've been walking at the river and it's just the right distance for Duke. It's easy to see he loves anywhere where there's water and loves being by the river. He's been running around looking ever so happy (I had a little emotional moment today watching him) and he's looking stronger on his legs. It was rainy and windy, but he was happy as pig in mud, literally. Can't say the same for Freddie who was looking very upset, but he is a huge wuss!
I don't have to have Duke on the lead much at all and he's very well behaved. When he is on the lead with his harness he is much easier to walk so I would definitely recommend his new owner to get one for him.
Duke is now booked in at vets to get his skin tag removed as where it is on his chest does get in the way.

Sounds as if he is doing brilliantly with you Clare, so pleased, he is such a lovely boy xx

Was taught an important lesson today. Labrador's are greedy and opportunistic. Stole half my scone! Gave me a kiss after though angel.gif

He was helping you out :winktongue:

After leaving Duke a few times in the kitchen for short periods, I thought I'd just leave him with Freddie in the living room for a few hrs while I was grooming in the garage. Good news! All fine on returning. I had taken everything out of reach that might be tempting, but I'm hopeful that being left with doggie company Duke's less likely to be bored.
-
That's good news :) I bet all the lovely walks he's having will help as well, hopefully he's ready for a snooze when you leave him angel.gif
-
Clever boy Duke it is nice to have doggy friends :) :) :) :) :)
-
Well done Duke....good boy :)
