Title: Ben 16 years young Collie x GentleMan
Post by: Dizzy on May 31, 2012, 11:44:03 am
(http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o505/DizzyDinosour/207d2a94.jpg)

Name: Ben
Breed - Collie Cross
Age - 16
Dog Friendly - Yes, he just ignores them!
Cat Friendly - Unknown, he is very laid back so wouldn't expect a problem
Child Friendly - Yes, but older children only due to his age
Chipped - Unknown
Vaccinated - Yes

Ben arrived with us on Tuesday after a very long trip. His owner has been taken into hospital so he has been brought back to us through no fault of his own. Ben is a lovely boy, who just wants to spend his time sleeping. He is very sweet natured and loves a cuddle.

Ben needs a quiet home where he can live out the rest of his days in peace.

Please put it an application as soon as you are interested in giving Ben his forever home. Approved application will be homechecked.

Details of our adoption procedures and adoption application form are http://www.fourpawsanimalrescue.org.uk/adoption_procedures.html

5th June

Ben has been with us for a week now and has settled in well.

After a visit to the vets last week, he has been prescribed Metacam to help with his back legs - the difference this has made is amazing. Before, Ben was just getting up to eat and go outside to pee but now he is following me around the house and has shown himself to be a very curious dog. We have even had his tail wagging which was a first.

Ben enjoys nothing more than having his belly scratched and sleeping and he also thought about playing with a toy, although once he discovers it's not food, he generally leaves it alone.

For the first couple of days, Ben completely ignored my dog, but he is now very friendly and patient with Dizzy's inquisitive nature.

Matt took Ben out for a walk this weekend, which he loved. He was very well behaved on lead but tends not to listen off lead (possibly because we suspect he is slightly hard of hearing).

18th June

It's hard to believe Ben has already been with us for three weeks, it feel's like so much longer! He is a lovely, lovely old man and is now a lot more sociable both with me and the other dogs. Nothing much fazes him and he is very patient with the younger dogs.

He is now going for a short walk every other day, and even though a ten minute stroll tires him out for the rest of the day he does enjoy it & tries his best to run like the young man he once was! He is beautifully well behaved on the lead and as with everything else, completely ignores any distractions.

He is spending most of his time at home sleeping, although he will wonder over for a scratch behind the ear every now and then. Hopefully he'll find his perfect companion soon!

29th June

Just over a month in, and of course we have fallen in love with this old man. So much so that we have decided to offer Ben his forever sofa! He is so settled with us here, it's hard to remember what it was like without him. We are very happy to be able to continue to love him for whatever time he has left as his long term foster parents. He is still showing us that he is a young man at heart and is an absolute delight.

If any one was looking for a calmer companion Ben would be the dog to have. I have met an spent time with him on a number of occasions an he is just the loveliest gent going. He is happy to lounge around when I have been there and he come over and nudges your hand when he wants a fuss. All he wants is a nice comfy bed yo live out the rest of his days.

I loves him just a little bit :cloud9: :luv:

Ben is beautiful :luv: is he still looking for a longterm foster home? and if so how important is distance? (I read you like foster homes close by, but does this apply to long-term foster homes too)?

Hi there, I was very good friends with Ben's old owner Don, who passed away last month.  I was trying to find out what happened to Ben and emailed fourpaws for any info.  I was so worried that he had been put down.  Don and Ben loved each other so much and Ben used to sit at the side of Don's chair and look adoringly at him, with Don stroking him.  Don was over 90 and a lovely kind man, when he was unable to walk very well he got himself a mobility scooter and we taught Ben how to walk along beside him, as good as gold.  Don would be over the moon that Ben has been taken in and is loved, thank you so much on behalf of Don.  Credit to you that Ben looks a real dapper gent, all glossy and happy.  Well done and thank you.

He meant such a lot to Don and he knew that fourpaws would look after Ben if anything should happen to him.  Don was housebound towards the end and paid for a dog walker to come and take Ben out every day.  I remember before Ben came Don had been mourning the loss of his little dog and was scared to go ahead and take on the responsibility of another dog so late in life, he was very depressed and lonely.  His daughter in law introduced him to fourpaws when she came up to visit, giving him hope of being able to take on another dog.   A few weeks later I was looking out of my window and there was Ben taking Don for a walk..... I did think at the time that the dog was too big, but it turned out fine.  I used to take him out for walks and get nice big bones from the butcher for him, but Ben didn't really know what to do with them!

When I read Ben's story last night I was in tears, I just cannot tell you how happy I am that he has found a loving home. Thank you so much fourpaws on behalf of Don, whom you made so happy in his last remaining days, housebound yes but with an adoring friend by his side to keep him company.

Give Ben a big hug from me, thank you so much once again.

It's so obvious that Ben was completely adored by Don, and everyone at Four Paws that met them both five years ago and knows their story has told me what a perfect couple they where.

We feel very blessed to be able to make a difference to him now, and we will continue to love him and give him lots of cuddles every day.

It's been a little while since I updated on Ben - sadly over the past week or so he's really started to show his age :'( he's pretty happy in himself, but his arthritis is causing him some problems and the poor old man is starting to loose his marbles a little bit :pathead: he's pacing a lot and will wander out into the back garden, stand there for a moment as if trying to remember why he went out and then turn and come straight back in. He's also taken to lying in the back garden and staring at the fence looking a little bit lost :(

That aside, he's still a wonderful old man and we love him more than ever. He's happy with his little life and is just as affectionate and waggy tailed as he's always been. He's been prescribed some new medication (Vivitonin) to help with the confusion and dullness, so fingers crossed he perks up a bit over the next few days.

I still feel there's life in him yet & we feel very blessed for every day we have with him. Picture below of Mr Ben doing what he does best ;D  ;)

Way to go Ben  :woohoo:  you can get away with anything just act a bit daft to get more treats.  One of our old dogs used to go out side and you could tell by her face she was thinking what am I doing here .  She would also stare at a wall, there was not the medication then, but she was still so funny some of the things she would do.  As long as they are happy and still enjoying life keep having fun Ben  :woohoo: Well done team Dizzy

Done :) he's had lots and lots of cuddles today as am so relieved there's nothing serious wrong and there's something we can do about it :)

I have been wondering if maybe he's missing Saffie a little bit - she was here with us for a month and although he's not the most sociable dog, she really took to him and was glued to his side constantly for four weeks. So maybe he's feeling a little lost with her suddenly gone?
